Probe for Windows2: Upgrading from Prwin v1

Prwin v1 does not run under Vista.

Options are...

  1. Hang on to PC's running XP.
  2. Prwin runs under Windows 7 Professional Virtual XP mode (but not Home Premium).
  3. New PC's can be licenced for Vista, but 'downgraded' to run XP (Google).
  4. Set up a virtual PC running XP on a Vista PC (Google).
  5. If you really insist on Vista, Prwin v2 can be used.

Prwin v2 is currently a beta version being used for trying out new ideas and features.

Some of these new features are (possibly) a 'good idea', but many 'seemed like a good idea at the time'.

This version has been used by some consultants and growers for the last 3 seasons. They are using CPN Neutron Probe, Diviner 2000, and various continous logged data.

Prwin v2 is currently being cleaned up, with the bad ideas deleted and the good ideas tested and checked. It was supposed to be ready by July 2008, and is currently (Aug 2009) being actively worked on.

Installing Prwin v2

Download setup and run it, and then the latest upgrade (139). Version notes are here.

The software will install in folder C:\Prwin2. (the final version will install in C:\Prwin)

After installing you will need to manually copy the following files...

A major change in Vista is control of which programmes are installed on a PC. You may need to right click and 'raise your UAC' when you run SETUP.EXE or UPG1234.EXE.

SETUP installs standard Microsoft files in C:\Windows\System, but they should already be on all Vista PC's. All other files - programme and data - are installed in or below C:\Prwin2.

Some installations have had problems with OCX files (part of the software) not being registered. You might need to... {REGSVR32.EXE notes to go here}

Licence

Prwin v2 uses a new licence system that is locked to a hard disk.

The software can be used for 30 days from first use without a licence.

If the software is re-installed the password does not need to be re-issued.

You will only need a new password if you replace the hard disk; buy a new PC; or transfer to another PC.

Folders

All uploaded post files are saved in C:\Prwin2\Postfiles. Extra sub-folders can be created (e.g.C:\Prwin2\Postfiles\2009).

All report files (*.rpt and *.gpt) must be in C:\Prwin2\Reports. This folder can be set to a shared network folder (ProbeMenu/SystemOptions).

All files used in calculations (*.dwu, *.rdi, etc) must be in C:\Prwin2\Shared. This folder can also be set to a shared network folder.
