Introduction

These notes describe a method of monitoring crops so that they can be irrigated with the correct amount of water at the right time.

The basic philosophy is that each soil profile is not average, neither are crops or weather. Objective measurements made of each crop cost very little compared with the benefits; and tell the grower an enormous amount about the state of that crop; in that particular field; with this weather.

The most useful measurement is soil moisture, taken at different depths down the soil profile. From these measurements informed decisions can be made about...

The soil moisture measurements can be made with any instrument, but for commercial use it needs to be reliable, accurate, repeatable, practical. Most of the data in the case studies were measured with a neutron probe, but many other instruments could have been used.

The data for the case studies is available in the sample data for both PR41 and Probe for Windows.
